Graduate Catalog

Overview

The Masters of Science in optics is awarded to students who have demonstrated a high level of ability in their graduate studies.  Two paths are possible: The Thesis option requires students to carry out and write a thesis on an original research project in optics under the direction of a school of optics faculty member.  The non thesis option requires only coursework, but a comprehensive oral examination must be taken.

Program of Study

The program of study details all courses taken and serves as the document that is approved by the Associate Dean, signifying that all requirements of the M.S. program have been met.  It may also serve as a way to help you plan your graduate studies.  The course requirements are outlined in the program of study, and are also detailed in the graduate catalog, which serves as the definitive source for degree requirements.  In developing a program of study, it is recommended that the program of study worksheet be used to plan out coursework on a semester-by semester basis.  To help with this planning, the School of Optics web site will maintain a draft schedule of courses that extends two years into the future.  The final program of study will be signed by the Associate Dean only once all degree requirements have been completed.

Timeline for MS degree

There are no specific examinations required for the MS, except the thesis defense, or for non-thesis students, the M.S. comprehensive oral exam.  Passing the PhD Qualifying exam may substitute for the M.S. comprehensive oral exam.  Students should for their Thesis Advisory Committee prior to scheduling their thesis defense.

Forms required for progress toward M.S.

The following pages give copies of all the forms you may need to complete along the way to completing the M.S.  Reading through these will give a good idea of what is required at each stage.
