Schedule & Requirements
This program is open to US citizens and permanent residents only. (permanent residents must provide documentation)
This program is open to all students pursuing majors in science and engineering, but two semesters of Physics and Calculus are required (Juniors and Seniors majoring in Physics or Electrical Engineering will be most suited to the program). A minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 is recommended, but not an absolute requirement. Participants will be selected on the basis of academic merit, personal references and suitability for the program. Women, minorities and persons with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.
US Program
The deadline for applications for the domestic REU program is February 20, 2008. However, applications received after this date may be considered if there is space available.
The US REU summer program is expected to run from
May 19 to August 8, 2008
Stipends for the summer are expected to be $5,000 with either accommodations provided or an allowance for housing. Some travel expenses may also be available.
International Program
Deadline for applications for International REU program is March 1, 2008.
The International REU summer program will run between
May 1 to September 30, 2008
Two year commitment by five entering students for 12-week summer program. The first summer internship at UCF or Clemson under the mentorship of a European graduate/post-doc as part of a US/European collaborative research program. The second summer internship performed in a collaborating international research institution, continuing research in the same research discipline.
Stipends for the summer are expected to be $3,800 (subject to confirmation) with a travel allowance of $700. Accommodations are provided by the host institutions in France and Germany. International program applicants are expected to have prior language experience or be enrolled in a language course in the 2008 Spring semester.
Completion of sophomore year of study Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, ECE or a related subject and interest and/or experience in Optics, Lasers and Optical Materials or related field of study is required. Women, minorities, and students from undergraduate institutions are especially encouraged to apply.
Selected students are encouraged to arrive at their host institution as early as possible after May 1. Health insurance and VISA fees are covered by the program. Students completing the international REU will receive one hour of research credit (paid by UCF) to transfer to their home institution, upon completion of their final project report.
