SID Student Chapter Seminar: “Design and Synthesis of Liquid Crystals for Organic Thin Film Transistors” by Dr. Chain-Shu Hsu

Abstract:

We design and synthesize a novel series of organic semiconductor materials which exhibits smectic liquid crystal phases and high OTFT carrier mobilities. An excellent OTFT carrier mobility of 0.68 cm2/(V·s) is observed using compound 12PADT, in which ODTS is used as the SAM layer and the sample is annealed at 80°C for 120 min. The high carrier mobility is comparable to those of current conventional silicon-based thin film transistors and good enough for manufacturing process of current electronic devices such as TFT-LCD manufacturing. It can also bring the benefits of feasibility for flexible displays and low-cost solution processes. In the future, we will take advantages of the liquid crystal-based organic semiconductor materials by applying additional alignment layers such as polyimide to align the organic semiconductors. Larger grain sizes of the molecules and better device performances with higher carrier mobility are expected.


Biography:

Chain-Shu Hsu received his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1987. Currently he is a chair professor of the National Chiao-Tung University. Hsu’s research interests are in the liquid crystalline polymers and conjugated polymers, polymer light-emitting diodes, and organic photovoltaics. He is currently on the international advisory boards of Macromolecules, Polymer and Journal of Polymer Science Part A. He received the Excellent Research Award of National Science Council, Taiwan in 1994, Franco-Taiwan Scientific Award on nanomaterials in 2006, Teco and Hou-Chin Tui Awards in 2007, Academic Award of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan in 2008, Nano-Tech Award, Taiwan Nanotechnology Industry Development Association in 2011, SPSJ International Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan in 2014 and Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Award in 2016.
