A paper on Gap-plasmon enhanced gold nanoparticle photoluminescence by CREOL graduate student Chatdanai Lumdee and postdoc Binfeng Yun in the Kik group is featured on the cover of the November 2014 issue of ACS Photonics. The study describes quantitatively how the surprisingly strong photoluminescence from gold nanoparticles on metal substrates is mediated by gap plasmons. The gap plasmons studied in the work are optical modes near the junction of a gold nanoparticle and a gold film, which can concentrate the incident laser light in a volume that is approximately 100,000 times smaller than can be achieved with standard far-field optics. Due to the large field enhancement produced by the gap plasmons inside the gold particle, the gold emission can become as much as a million times stronger than from a flat gold film.
