- Prototyping, fabricating and characterizing novel fiber lasers and fiber devices employing specialty fibers
- Monolithic integration of specialty fibers in compactly, robustly and efficiently engineered optical systems
- Spatial and temporal dynamics in continuous wave and pulsed fiber laser and amplifier systems
- Modeling and characterization of light propagation properties in specialty fibers 
- Creation and realization of advanced diagnostic techniques for in-depth characterization of optical devices
- Optical holography
- Application of fiber-based optical devices as sensors
