Greetings Friends of CREOL: Hello, and welcome to the inaugural edition of e-Highlights, published monthly by the University of Central Florida 's College of Optics and Photonics. In this issue we feature: an invitation for Industrial Affiliates Day; two Optics students who won Newport Research Awards; Eric Van Stryland Named Among "Most Influential Floridians;" and preview plans for the CREOL building expansion. Additionally, I would like to extend an invitation to all of you. MARK YOUR CALENDARS: INDUSTRIAL AFFILIATES DAY, April 1, 2005 You won't want to miss Industrial Affiliates Day of the College of Optics and Photonics: CREOL & FPCE . The theme for this year's program is €œOptics & Photonics €“ Envisioning the Future.€ We have several nationally-known speakers from DARPA, Newport Spectra-Physics, NIST, Cognoscenti, and Intel Corp as invited speakers in the morning. The afternoon has additional talks, lab tours, and a poster session on current research at the College. College of Optics & Photonics students win Newport ReseaRch Excellence Awards

and
Chien-Hui "Vicky" Wen
received Newport Research Excellence Awards at SPIE's International Symposium, Photonics West 2005 with the papers, "Pinning effect on the phase separation dynamics of thin polymer-dispersed liquid crystals," and "Ultraviolet (Pictured: Jason Eichenholz of Newport Spectra-Physics (left), Dr Shin-Tson Wu, Professor at UCF, Chien-Hui Wen award winner from UCF, Yi-Hsin Lin award winner from UCF, and Gary Spiegel, Vice President of Worldwide Sales Newport Spectra-Physics at the Newport Spectra-Physics reception at Photonics West in San Jose.) Additionally, Yi-Hsin Lin's paper was selected for publication as a feature article in the January 24, 2005 issue of Optics Express. Ms. Lin and Ms. Wen are graduate students in Prof. Shin-Tson Wu's Liquid Crystal Displays research group. Click here for more information on Photonics West.
ERIC VAN STRYLAND NAMED ONE OF FLORIDA'S MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE
Eric Van Stryland, Van Stryland is one of only five people from the academic community selected for this honor.
CREOL FACILITIES SET TO EXPAND A $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, paired with additional funding from the University of Central Florida and the Florida Photonics Center of Excellence (FPCE), will allow CREOL to add 24 new laboratories and 24 new offices to its current facility. The new space will allow companies to work side-by-side with UCF students and faculty, and improve the flow of new technology from CREOL and FPCE labs to companies for application in new or improved products.
