The Annual Spring Thing
To conclude a week of SPIE meetings and Affiliates' Day preparations, it was a pleasure to see our friends and colleagues relax and unwind on the shores of Lake Jessup at the home of VP for Research, MJ Soileau.  Those attending this year's Spring Thing received a well prepared feast of favorites.  The highlight of the menu was the roasted pork, "PIGasus". More Photos!

Congratulations to Dr. Winston Schoenfeld, Asst Professor of Optics and leader of the CREOL Nanophotonics Device Group, who has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Florida Chapter of the American Vacuum Society (AVS).  AVS is a not-for-profit professional society (see http://www.avs.org/default.aspx) that promotes communication between academia, government laboratories, and industry for the purpose of sharing research and development findings over a broad range of technologically relevant topics, including Nanometer-Scale Science and Technology and Surface Science.

DELFYETT HONORED AS A TRAILBLAZER BY SCIENCE SPECTRUM MAGAZINE
Congratulations to Dr. Peter J. Delfyett, who has been selected by the editorial staff of Science Spectrum magazine to be honored as a Science Spectrum Trailblazer during the 2006 Minorities in Research Science Conference.  Members of this year's class of the Science Spectrum Trailblazers, Top Minorities in Science will be recognized on Friday afternoon, September 15, 2006 in Baltimore, Maryland at the Trailblazers recognition luncheon.

Science Spectrum Trailblazers are minority men and women actively creating new paths for others in science, research, technology, and development. Some are experienced executives who continuously seek innovative products or lines of thought, some are breaking new ground at the midpoint of their careers, and others are recent grads that show pioneering promise. But regardless of their career point, they distinguish themselves by constantly setting their sights higher, striving to innovate, and opening doors for others.

Please join me in congratulating Peter on this fine recognition.
