Townes Laser Institute

In its commitment as a major academic center in the fields of optics, photonics, lasers and optical materials, directed in part to enabling next-generation advanced technologies, UCF has recently dedicated a new research and education center, the Townes Laser Institute that will join a cluster of research centers, including CREOL, and the FPCE centered around the College of Optics & Photonics, the first optics college in the nation. This new institute, named after Charles Townes, the inventor of the laser will create a nucleus of expertise, resources and facilities, with major investments in new core laser technologies critical to their application in medical and biotechnologies, advanced manufacturing technologies and defense applications of lasers. The Townes Laser Institute now opens two new faculty positions in the areas of (i) advanced optical fiber technologies and fiber lasers and (ii) ceramic laser materials. Tenured in the College of Optics & Photonics, with possible joint appointments in other departments at levels up to Full Professor the successful candidates for these positions should possess a PhD in engineering, physics, material science or a related area and will be expected to build strong graduate research and educational programs, taking advantage of the collaborative research environment within the Institute and College. Generous funds for startup are available for these positions. In addition successful candidates will have a significant role in determining the use of the one-time State center-of-excellence funds allocated to the Townes Laser Institute for major facilities. Significant components of a fiber facility are already available. The College of Optics & Photonics now comprises some 40 full-time and associated faculty, nearly 200 graduate students and an annual budget of ~$20M. A new 21,000 sq.ft addition to the CREOL building at UCF has just been completed, and ground was broken last year on a new medical school as part of a Life Sciences cluster that will include several international medical research institutes and hospitals.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, statement of research plan, and names of three references to:
