Seminar: "Resonant Micro-Photonics: Advantages and Disadvantages of Small Size" by Andrey Matsko

Abstract:

The constant call for the reduction of the size, weight, and power consumption in opto-electronic devices resulted in spectacular achievements nowadays. Chip-scale photonic structures are becoming indispensable in communications and sensing. There is a loud call for reduction of size of metrology devices, such as gyroscopes, accelerometers, oscillators, and clocks. Since a direct reduction of the device size by scaling its components is usually not feasible, new configurations have to be discovered. This is not a trivial problem and the question about both usefulness and viability of such a transformation arises. In this presentation, I review our recent achievements in downsizing and integration of various metrology devices and show that while size reduction improves a multitude of characteristics of the structures, such as power consumption, environmental stability, nonlinear conversion efficiency, and sensitivity, it also results in a rather significant increase of both the fundamental and technical noises limiting the performance quality. This observation calls for a further investigation of the subject to create the optimal micro-photonic metrological structures.


Biography:

Dr. Matsko, Chief Technology Officer of OEwaves Inc., has actively worked in the fields of laser physics, quantum and nonlinear optics, photonics, and quantum measurement theory since 1997. He contributed to the development of technology involving crystalline whispering gallery mode resonators, including electro-optical modulators, RF photonic receivers, optical and RF photonic filters, delay lines, clocks, magnetometers, gyroscopes, oscillators, and lasers. Dr. Matsko has authored and coauthored more than 180 peer-reviewed papers as well as forty one US Patents. He is a Fellow of OSA as well as Senior Member of IEEE and SPIE.
