The Townes Laser Institute and CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics, are establishing a new initiative in Lasers in Medicine and Biophotonics. As part of this initiative, new faculty positions are open, to strengthen partnerships with ongoing activities in The School of Biomedical Sciences and The College of Medicine.

We are now seeking candidates for a tenured/tenure track faculty position who will lead an internationally visible research program and contribute to our educational programs in advanced biophotonics. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree from an accredited institution in a closely related field, research experience in a relevant discipline, a willingness to mentor students and teach in optics and biophotonics, and the aptitude to partner with collaborators and promote new science and technology for outside funding from federal and other research agencies.

The successful candidate should have demonstrated potential for leading a research program on using the physics of light in life sciences to solve scientific and technical challenges in areas related to biosensing, neuro imaging, optical diagnostics and therapeutics, nonlinear optical imaging techniques, and other areas in biophotonics, and laser applications in medicine.

The Townes Laser Institute is housed within CREOL, which is one of the nation’s premier academic research centers in advanced laser technologies and their applications. Its mission is to advance laser technologies that will impact applications in manufacturing, medicine and defense. CREOL is the first graduate college of optics in the country. The College comprises ~50 full-time and associated faculty, over 130 graduate students, a new undergraduate program, and an annual research budget of ~17M.

UCF, with an enrollment of more than 66,000 students and growing, is located in Orlando, a large metropolitan city centrally positioned in Florida’s High Tech Corridor between Tampa/St. Petersburg, and Cape Canaveral. The new College of Medicine, which includes the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences, has stimulated a strong interest in biophotonics at CREOL. INTRODUCTION
ASML in Wilton CT is seeking an Optical Engineer / Physicist in the Optical Modules Development Group US to work with a multi-discipline engineering team to define and develop optical / photonic sensor systems and/or test equipment used within ASML’s photolithography and/or metrology equipment. These systems typically include light sources, detectors, optical / electro-optical components, fiber optics, electronics and signal processing SW. Understanding the components in their relation to the sensor system function and understanding the interaction with the rest of the metrology or lithography system is of fundamental importance.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Leading the design team in test equipment development to find solutions to difficult technical problems in an efficient manner;
  • Decomposition of top-level system requirements into lower level module, sub-module, or component level design specifications for product or test equipment towards the engineering team;
  • Deriving specifications for module, sub-module, or test equipment consistent with our manufacturing practices;
  • Development of alignment methods for complex optical sensors and systems;
  • Development of tooling and test equipment to support optical sensor alignment methods;

EDUCATION
Minimum MS in Optical Engineering, or Physics with an emphasis on Optical metrology. Candidates with BS in optical engineering or optical physics with atleast 5 years’ experience in Optical Metrology will be considered.

  • Be experienced with diverse optical metrology setups: Interferometers, Shack – Hartmann sensor, polarimetry/ellipsometry & Optical alignment.

CONTEXT of the POSITION
The Optical Sensors & Metrology Development Group in Wilton CT is seeking a well-rounded engineer with direct experience in optical engineering. The optical modules developed for ASML’s products will include sources, detectors, geometric/diffractive optics and electro-optic components.   • Operate thin film vacuum coating chambers, automated and manual control for catalog production, as well as, research and development projects.

Experience:

  • Some industry experience or related coursework in the field of nonlinear optics and photonics

Education:

  • Preferably a PhD, at minimum a Master’s degree in Optical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
  • Demonstrated technical background and hands on experience in such fields as optics, laser optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, nanoscale photonics, metamaterials, thin films, and polarization.
  • Familiarity with FEA and Multiphysics Simulation Software, e.g. COMSOL
  • Proficiency in a computer language such as MATLAB, C++, Python, Labview, Visual Basic
  • Familiarity with optical modeling software, specifically Zemax or Code V, but also relevant TFCalc, Essential MacLeod, Filmstar, OSLO, etc.
  • Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D modeling programs
  • Familiarity with Spectral, Structural, and Electrical characterizations such as Raman, FTIR, SEM+EDS, TEM, AFM, etc.

Purpose of the Position

Thorlabs Advanced Optical Systems in Newton NJ, produces state-of-the-art high resolution lens systems. We are seeking a talented Optical Engineer to design multi-element diffraction limited lenses and systems.

The ideal candidate will have experience designing high resolution lenses, and have a good understanding of optical alignment and tolerances, and how they affect image quality. The successful candidate will assist in bringing new products from prototype to production, with an emphasis on robust manufacture-able designs, in a lean manufacturing facility. The job includes occasional participation in detailed technical discussions with customers, sales and field service members and may require some travel.

  • Design precision multi-element lens systems, including tolerance analysis, metrology requirements, assembly procedures and mechanical design support.

Laboratory experience beyond basic laboratory courses [i.e., participation in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), senior honors project, or the like] is highly desirable. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop effective content and application images for use in various forms of marketing collateral
  • Create tutorials, sales sheets, monitor presentations, posters, and brochures
  • Develop application images based on Thorlabs’ products
  • Partner with the graphics staff to create product videos and animations
  • Learn and implement best practices for building website content
  • Develop and implement search engine optimization projects for various product lines
  • Participate in defining and developing new product and/or product enhancements
  • Additional responsibilities may include participating in and leading marketing projects and attending tradeshows

 Requirements

  • Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral Degree in Physics, Optics, Lasers, Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong writing and presentation skills in English
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to multitask, be detail oriented, and solve problems, all while under tight time constraints
  • 5 years of applicable experience or documentation of completed coursework towards a degree from an accredited institution

This position is based in New Product Introduction Group (NPI) within the manufacturing sector in Wilton, Connecticut.

Job Description

-Work with Optical, Mechanical, Electrical and Software Engineering staff to develop assembly concepts  and qualification tests for new product design
-Support senior production engineers to introduce new products into production in an existing “Concurrent Engineering” environment
-Support senior production engineers to develop production sequence and routings
-Support senior production engineers to develop Manufacturing procedures and technical work instructions
-Support in-production issues by assisting Production Assembly and Test Engineers and Technicians with concise troubleshooting of Opto-Mechanical/Electrical Modules and Sub-Modules
-Evaluate and disposition failed parts with proposed solutions
-Review Failure Analysis Reports from suppliers and help validate the root-cause of the failure Interface with internal and external customers regarding contamination test result, testing methods, and control strategy
-Support senior production engineers to create and direct equipment calibration, upkeep, and new equipment specification and procurement for all analytical instruments used in manufacturing
-Able to read optical, mechanical and electrical drawings
-Knowledge of Code-V and /or Zemax
-Knowledge of MATLAB, LabVIEW and Python

Job Description

The main responsibility of the intern is to assist Production Engineers in the development of the manufacturing process for new product. This responsibility includes drafting technical work instructions and engineering test plans, assisting in troubleshooting complex opto-mechanical and opto-electrical problems, and collecting and analyzing cycle time data. The intern will be working with senior Production Engineer during this intern.
